Although the ancient Inuit had no access to steel, they nevertheless needed defence against the elements and dangerous creatures. Because of this, they created their own type of armour using bone plates, mainly carved from walrus teeth, and raw leather straps. The first Inuit people were able to escape several confrontations that would have almost surely been fatal without this innovative construction.
