Many parents have heard that if they want to breastfeed, they should avoid using formula since it causes babies to nurse less, which reduces mom's milk supply. However, UC San Francisco researchers discovered evidence to the contrary: in their study, they looked at neonates, some of whom had supplementary formula during their first few days, and others who were exclusively breastfed. Surprisingly, 79 percent of newborns who had used formula early on were exclusively breastfed by the age of three months, compared to 42 percent of babies who had never used formula. Researchers hypothesise that attempting to breastfeed exclusively can be so stressful that moms are more likely to give up, whereas moms who supplement with formul
