The Earth has seen a number of mass extinctions. When the previous one occurred 66 million years ago, dinosaurs were extinct. The scientific community agrees that it occurred as a result of the effects of a 10-kilometer asteroid hitting the Yucatan Peninsula. Upon impact, a 180 km crater was left. Due to the chemical makeup of the soil, it is thought that an asteroid, not a comet, killed the dinosaurs.
