Sudan has outlawed carrying out female genital mutilation (FGM), making it punishable by 3 years in jail. A UN report says 87% of Sudanese women aged 14 to 49 undergo some form of FGM. In Sudan it has become common for women to get the inner and outer labia, and usually the clitoris, removed. FGM can lead to urinary tract infections, uterine infections, kidney infections, cysts, reproductive issues & pain during sex.
