Christie's was auctioning the diamond, which has been called "The Sakura", named after Japanese cherry blossoms. The diamond was auctioned as part of a wider event that saw Christie's sell nearly $76.8 million in jewellery. Because of the richness of its colour and microscopic defects, Christie's classified the diamond as 'fancy vivid'. An Asian private bidder paid more than $29 million for the diamond. His identity remains unknown.
