Banks responsible for safety of lockers: SC directs RBI to frame rules for banks to respect locker management

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices M M Shantanagoudar and Vineet Saran said that banks cannot break open lockers without written notice to locker holders while adding that the safety of lockers is the responsibility of the banks. The apex court also directed the Reserve Bank of India to frame rules and regulations for banks to respect the security of the lockers. The court said lockers have become an essential service.
